Colin Missen

OBITUARY

C A MISSEN

It was with great sadness that we heard of the passing of our longest serving and most respected member, Colin Missen.   Colin passed away on Friday 26th March after a short illness in hospital.

Colin was a Founder Member of the Leicester Taverners Motorcycle Club and they were then persuaded by ‘Titch’ I understand to join the V.M.C.C.   I believe it was a condition of joining that they kept the title “Taverners”.  Why that name?  Because they met in the now defunct Leicester Tavern.

Colin introduced me to the V.M.C.C. about 1963 and found me my first Scott very soon after (£2-10/- CXF 267 where are you now?) and he found the last one we bought in 2000.  He has a lot to answer for.

Colin and I served together on the Taverners’ Committee for many years, usually he as Chairman and myself as Secretary.  His meticulous preparation and attention to detail was amazing, also his recording of events, whether it was a “Lands End” Trial, yes he introduced me to “MCC” events, many of which we rode together, or a trip to Stafford Show, all was recorded later in great detail.

Colin had been early Triumph Marque Specialist for many years, so there will be many early Triumph owners around the world mourning his passing, wondering where they go now for advice, as Colin’s knowledge of early Triumph’s was second to none.

Colin’s boyish enthusiasm and zest for life stayed with him right to the end.  Unfortunately he didn’t get to ride the 250cc Yamaha he’d bought a month ago.  He thought it would be easier to ride than bump starting his Triumphs.  He was just short of his 80th Birthday.  What a man.

So thank you Colin, you were one of life’s Gentleman.  I know it is a well worn cliché, but I can assure you he will be very much missed.

Our thoughts are with Thelma and the family at this sad time.
